The primitive church dates back to the fifteenth century but has earlier origins of a few centuries.
It was rebuilt and enlarged between 1908 and 1936 in a neo-Gothic style.
The church was severely damaged by the earthquakes of 1976, and was subsequently rebuilt with three naves in modern architectural lines, reusing the twelve stone columns of the previous neo-Gothic church, and consecrated in 1987.
