Ancient historical sources suggest that an ancient church rose in the same place already in the Lombard period, during the ninth century. Evidence from wills and donations suggest that the church changed hands until 1450, the year of the Turkish invasion which completely destroyed the town of Cooz. Following this event, the church was entirely rebuilt, and then restored in two successive interventions during the eighteenth century and following the 1976 earthquake.
